We first meet Mai on board the ship to Duelist Kingdom, where she is challenged by Ryuzaki Dinosaur (Rex Raptor) for her room on the ship, and stomps him easily. Once they got to the island, she easily stamped out loads of Duelists using a mind trick to fake them out, until she Dueled Jonouchi Katsuya  (Joey Wheeler), who defeated her because he had pure motives for entering the tournament, where as she was Dueling for herself. despite the one lost, she still went to the Duelist Kingdom finals, but lost during the first round to Yugi Motou. Shortly afterwards, she was hired by Kaiba Corp. to test their new virtual reallity game. Soon, she discovered that Seto Kaiba was trapped inside and went to save him along with Yugi Motou, Jonouchi Katsuya, and Mokuba Kaiba, Seto's younger brother. She was the first to lose and was pulled out of the game, leaving the others to face the most dangerous monster she'd ever heard of, The Mythic Dragon. After that, she was invited to participate in Kaiba's Battle City Tournament, where she made it to the finals, but lost again, this time to Malik Ishtal (Marik Ishtar), and her mind was temporalily locked in The Shadow Realm and freed at the end of the tournament.
