Bastila was born to a family of treasure hunters on Talravin. At an early age she was taken away to become a Jedi, to her mother's relief, believing she was hindering her husband's treasure hunting. Pent up anger at her mother and the strict teachings of the Jedi Order caused Bastila to become a brash young woman. She was also extremely gifted with the Force. She possessed a skill known to the Jedi as Battle Meditation. In battle, she could bolster the attack force of one time and lower the spirits of the opposing forces. During Revan and Malak's conquest of the galaxy, she was part of a Jedi task force sent to capture Revan. Her Battle Meditation allowed her to breach the ship's defenses and capture Revan. The Council wiped the Sith Lord's mind, programming it with a cover identity. The Council kept them close to each other so Shan could keep an eye on the Sith Lord. When she was put in charge of a Republic ship, the Endar Spire, Revan was a raw recruit put on the crew by special request. When a Sith fleet overtook the vessel, Revan, Bastila, and the pilot, Carth Onasi were the only ones to make it to the escape pods. Bastila took the first pod alone, crashing into the Undercity of Taris, where she was taken captive by the Black Vulkar Swoop Gang. Fitted with a dehabilitation collar, she was unable to defend herself. The gang's leader, Brejik, used her as the Black Vulkar's entry fee in the season opener, which would decide which gang would gain control of the Lower City: the violent Black Vulkars, or the docile Hidden Beks. However, Revan, seeking to rescue Bastila, entered the race, winning. Brejik attempted to pull her out at the last minute to sell her on the slave market. But Bastila finally broke the Vulkar's hold over her and she and Revan killed all of the Black Vulkars. Braking into crimelord Davik Kang's estate and stealing his flagship, the Ebon Hawk, they broke through the blockade and traveled to the Jedi enclave on Dantooine, where Revan's mind was reopened to the Force. In the ancient ruins on Dantooine, Bastila and Revan discovered that Malak was using an ancient weapon called the Star Forge to amass a huge fleet. They were sent on a quest to find the Star Forge by peicing together Star Maps from Dantooine, Kashyyk, Tatooine, Korriban, and Manaan. On their way to the 5th planet, they were captured by the head of Malak's fleet, the Leviathan. On the ship, Malak told Revan his true identity as a Sith Lord. The two dueled but Bastila jumped in, allowing the rest of the crew to escape. Malak bested her and turned her to the dark side. She and Revan faced each other. At this point, the records differ. Some say that the two joined forces and succeeded Revan as Sith Lords. Others say that Revan turned her back to the light and she was able to use Battle Meditation to defeat the Sith, while Revan killed Malak. Both scenarios agree that Malak was defeated, one way or the other.
